KUNMING, March 30 (Xinhua) -- A medical team from southwest China's Yunnan Province arrived at the Yangon International Airport in Myanmar on Saturday morning, marking the arrival of the first foreign rescue team in Myanmar since a massive earthquake struck the country on Friday.
The 37-member team carried emergency relief supplies such as full-feature life detectors, earthquake early-warning systems, portable satellite telecom devices and drones, and has joined forces with Myanmar's fire and rescue services to undertake disaster relief work in the affected areas of Naypyidaw.
A total of 1,644 people died and 3,408 were injured, and 139 remained missing in the disaster in Myanmar, according to the country's Information Team of the State Administration Council on Saturday night.
An 82-member Chinese rescue team dispatched by China's Ministry of Emergency Management also arrived in Myanmar on Saturday afternoon to aid disaster relief efforts, carrying rescue equipment and supplies.
The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has sent emergency humanitarian aid to Myanmar, including 300 tents, 2,000 blankets, 600 folding beds and relief kits for 2,000 affected households. An international RCSC rescue team has also departed for Myanmar with necessary equipment to carry out humanitarian relief operations, the RCSC said on Saturday.
Rescue forces from many parts of China are rushing to aid Myanmar.
A 23-member volunteer team from Shenzhen in south China's Guangdong Province departed for Myanmar on Saturday afternoon, carrying light rescue equipment, medical emergency equipment and life detectors, and accompanied by one rescue dog, to assist in disaster relief and rescue efforts.
The Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, some 300 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, has urgently dispatched tents, medicines, folding beds, cotton blankets, instant noodles and other relief materials worth an approximate total of 1.1 million yuan (around 153,300 U.S. dollars) to support earthquake relief work in Myanmar.
On Saturday, 16 experienced members of the China Blue Sky Rescue Team's Yunnan branch left the border port of Ruili for Myanmar, carrying personal protective equipment, first aid kits, power generation lighting equipment, demolition tools, and other urban-use earthquake rescue equipment and supplies.
The government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has also dispatched a 51-member rescue team to assist in search and rescue efforts in the affected areas.
Li Ming, a spokesperson for the China International Development Cooperation Agency, said that China will provide 100 million yuan in emergency humanitarian aid to Myanmar to support local earthquake relief efforts.
At the request of the Myanmar government, China will also send two rescue teams and supply tents, blankets, first aid kits, food and drinking water -- items that are urgently needed in impacted areas, Li said on Saturday.
The first batch of supplies is scheduled for delivery on Monday, and China will offer further assistance based on Myanmar's needs, Li said.
As of 4 p.m. on Saturday, customs clearance operations at all points on the China-Myanmar border are normal, according to Kunming Customs. The customs office has launched its emergency customs clearance coordination mechanism, arranged for staff to be on duty 24 hours a day, and opened a green channel to ensure the rapid inspection of and customs clearance for relief materials, rescue workers and people in need of medical treatment.
