JERUSALEM, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Israel and Japan took one match each on Day 1 of the 2023 Davis Cup World Group I tie on Saturday.
The best-of-five tie took place on an indoor hardcourt at the Shlomo Group Arena in the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv.
Japan's top racket Sho Shimabukuro, currently 146th in the ATP world rankings, won the first match, 6-4, 7-6(5) against world No. 470 Yshai Oliel.
In the second match, Israel's 372nd-ranked Daniel Cukierman came back from the first set loss to beat world No. 193 Shintaro Mochizuki.
The competition will continue on Sunday, starting with the doubles match. The tie winning team will secure a spot in the Davis Cup Qualifiers.
