TOKYO, Japan: Corolla Sport, the hydrogen-powered model from Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation, will race in the 2022 Super Taikyu series, while automakers Mazda and Subaru are set to enter their own cars operating on biofuel.
Toyota debuted the developmental hydrogen-powered Corolla at the Fuji 24 Hours Race in May, followed by races in Okayama, Suzuka, and Autopolis.
During the Suzuka race, Toyota said the hydrogen Corolla's tri-cylinder turbo-charged engine attained a power output equal to that of its petrol engine-powered GR Yaris, which it is modeled after. Officials report that during a round at Okayama, the hydrogen system helped to reduce the time needed to refuel from four minutes and thirty seconds at Fuji to a mere one minute and fifty seconds.
In 2022, the hydrogen-driven Corolla will be contesting yet again in the ST-Q category for developmental vehicles, along with sports cars, such as the Toyota-Subaru collaboration 86 model and Subaru BRZ -- operating on synthetic fuel acquired through gasifying biomass.
