WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. President Donald Trump says tariffs on China are working by claiming credit for a major slide in that country's economy.
Data released on Sunday in Beijing showed GDP growth has fallen to 6.2%, the lowest in twenty seven years.
"China's 2nd Quarter growth is the slowest it has been in more than 27 years. The United States Tariffs are having a major effect on companies wanting to leave China for non-tariffed countries. Thousands of companies are leaving. This is why China wants to make a deal with the US," the president said in a tweet posted on Sunday.
Mr Trump went on to say the tariffs were having no negative effects on the United States.
"In the meantime, we are receiving Billions of Dollars in Tariffs from China, with possibly much more to come. These Tariffs are paid for by China devaluingpumping, not by the U.S. taxpayer!," he said in a follow-up tweet.
The U.S. and China have only recently agreed to resume talks after they broke down with both sides claiming the other had reneged on matters agreed.
As the two countries are the world's global economic superpowers, the state of the world economy hangs in the balance.
